CNC Wood Routers: Buying New vs. Used

Of course you can buy used CNC wood routers. The question is, should you? Having researched the pros and cons on the issue, I can attest that the price of a used CNC wood router should not be the single determining factor. Actually, there isn't a single factor that would help you decide whether to buy a new or used CNC wood router.

CNC Machining CenterWhen considering the purchase of a used CNC wood router, you should take into account the age and "mileage" of the router. The older the router, the more time and money are involved in getting the controller software up-to-date. The software, as you know, will also require an annual license fee. Before buying, it would be a good idea to first find out what it would cost to get the software updated and whether it is still supported. As for "mileage," you may want to find out how easy or difficult it would be to obtain replacement parts for the router and what those may cost to purchase, ship and install. If the used CNC wood router that you're considering buying is more than 3 to 4 years old, you may want to think again.

CNC Wood RoutersSince this is a wood router, there is wood dust to consider and whether the machine in question has been well cared for and maintained. Wood dust accummulation, especially in the absence of a vacuum and wood dust collection system, could significantly decrease the amount of usability from the time of purchase.

Add to that price the cost of professional installation, setup and training unless you have a professional installer/maintenance & software guru on staff. If so, that leaves you with cost of training. You'll need to contact the manufacturer to find out if training on the machine is offered and the cost of that training.

Left out of this equation is whether the used CNC wood router will be used as a standalone machine or whether you plan to add it to your nested based machining system. If it will be used as a standalone machine, the entire cost may be just what your budget ordered. However, if it is to be added to a nested machine grouping, you may want to speak to a networking specialist to discuss the amount of hours this could take. It's quite possible that a new CNC wood router may cost you less in the long term.
